CMP receives SONAMI’s “San Lorenzo” Award on Miners’ Day

The distinction recognizes the company’s long-standing track record, its contribution to the development of the Atacama Region, and its commitment to sustainable mining.

As part of the commemoration of Miners’ Day, the National Mining Society (SONAMI) presented Compañía Minera del Pacífico (CMP) with the “San Lorenzo” Award, an annual distinction recognizing mining workers and companies that have made significant contributions to the development of the industry and the progress of the regions where mining takes place.

The award ceremony was held in the town of Domeyko, in the Atacama Region, a highly symbolic setting given the close relationship CMP has built over decades with Huasco Province and its economic and social development.

“Receiving this award is a source of pride for everyone at CMP, as it represents the work we have been carrying out for years alongside the communities of Atacama, promoting a mining industry that seeks to create shared value, contribute to territorial development, and build a sustainable future,” said CMP General Manager Carlos Espinoza.

On this occasion, the company was recognized for its long-standing presence and contribution to the region, where it operates strategic assets such as Los Colorados Mine, the Pellet Plant, and Guacolda II Port. The award also recognized CMP’s track record in the industry and its investments to ensure operational continuity, incorporating initiatives focused on sustainability, efficiency, community development, and strategic engagement with small-scale miners.

SONAMI President Jorge Riesco highlighted the reasons behind the organization’s decision to grant the award: “We have recognized CMP with the San Lorenzo Award, which is traditionally presented every year as part of Miners’ Day, because of the value this company represents for Huasco Province and, more broadly, for the Atacama Region.”

The mining industry’s recognition of the company’s significance was echoed by public authorities attending the ceremony, further underscoring the importance of this milestone.

Chile’s Undersecretary of Mining, Álvaro González, said: “I would like to congratulate CMP, and above all, its employees and executives, on receiving the San Lorenzo Award. We value the contribution they make to this region.”

Along the same lines, Atacama Regional Governor Miguel Vargas highlighted the company’s strong ties to the territory through its operations in Caldera, Copiapó, Tierra Amarilla, Vallenar, and Huasco: “CMP is a company with a long history in the Atacama Region. It is part of the diversity represented by mining in our region, in this case through iron production, with important projects in Vallenar, Huasco, and also in the municipality of Caldera.”

With this distinction, CMP reaffirms its commitment to the sustainable development of the iron mining industry, promoting a management approach that combines operational excellence, innovation, and strong engagement with local communities, contributing to the growth of the regions where it operates and strengthening an industry that is key to Chile’s development.
